THE SPIRIT’S INTERNAL GUIDANCE SYSTEM
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is a fundamental, liberating truth for every believer: if you belong to Christ, the old sin nature no longer controls your life.
You are not a helpless captive to temptation. The very same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead now dwells inside your mortal body, giving you a brand-new internal guidance system.
1. You Are No Longer a Slave to the Flesh
As followers of Jesus, we must flatly reject the lie that "I just can't help myself."
While none of us will attain sinless perfection on this side of eternity, Scripture assures us that sin no longer holds legal dominion over our choices (Romans 6:14). You are not defined by the cravings of your old nature; you are empowered by the indwelling Spirit of God.
2. A Brand-New Guidance System
When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart. You are no longer navigating life using the limited, broken compass of fallen human logic.
The Spirit gives life to your mind, will, and emotions, aligning your spirit with the Father's heart and empowering you to walk in righteousness.
3. The Power of Joyful Surrender
If the Holy Spirit already lives inside us, why do so many believers struggle to walk in daily victory? Because our daily calling is surrender.
Wisdom from the Saints:
A.W. Tozer noted that the Christian life is "not a life of works or striving, but one of joyful surrender."
Smith Wigglesworth famously wrote: "You must come to see how wonderful you are in God and how helpless you are in yourself."
Victory is not won through frantic human effort or white-knuckled self-control; it is experienced when we learn to yield control to the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
How to Discern the Voice of the Spirit
Learning to yield requires learning to listen. Over years of ministry, I have taught that there are three indispensable anchors for discerning the promptings and voice of the Holy Spirit:
The Word of God: The Holy Spirit will never, ever contradict the written Scriptures. Truth is anchored in the Word. The more thoroughly you know the Bible, the easier it becomes to recognize the Spirit's voice.
The Spirit of God: We must dedicate unhurried time to prayer, worship, and quiet listening. Developing "spiritual ears" takes practice. Many find that journaling during prayer helps natural human thoughts quiet down so the quiet patterns of the Spirit become clear.
The Family of God: God intentionally places us inside a local church community. Sharing what you sense the Holy Spirit says wise, Spirit-filled believers provides accountability, clarity, and confirmation.
Reflection & Application
Are you striving in self-effort or yielding in surrender? Are you trying to fix your habits through human willpower, or are you surrendering your plans to the Holy Spirit?
Are you saturating your mind with Scripture? Do you read God's Word regularly, so your mind is tuned to recognize His voice above the noise of the world?
Are you connected to spiritual community? Do you have authentic, Spirit-filled believers in your life who can help you discern God's direction for your decisions?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I yield my heart, my thoughts, and my plans to You today. I acknowledge that in myself I am helpless, but in You I am fully equipped to walk in victory.
Teach me the art of joyful surrender. Deliver me from white-knuckled striving and teach me how to listen quietly for Your direction.
Anchor my life in Your Word, tune my heart through prayer and worship, and surround me with wise, Spirit-filled believers. Help me to recognize Your gentlest promptings and follow You with joy every single day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
