HOW DO OTHERS LEAVE YOUR PRESENCE?

ree

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions. Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses. Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod. Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites disaster.”

Proverbs 10:11-14 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The Bible teaches us a lot about the power of our words.

1. Words have the power to give life.

Solomon writes, “The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain” (v. 11). He also reminds us in Proverbs 18:21, “The power of life and death are in the tongue.”

When God created the universe, He spoke it into existence. He said, “Let there be…,” and it was so. God’s words carried creative power—and while we can’t create worlds, our words still hold tremendous influence. We can speak life, encouragement, and hope into others, or we can tear down and destroy. Every word we speak has potential.

2. Words reveal the heart

Our passage continues, “The words of the wicked conceal violent intentions” (v. 11). Even when someone tries to cover up wrong motives, their words eventually reveal what’s hidden inside.

Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). In other words, you can’t hide what’s in your heart forever—it will come out in your speech. If bitterness, anger, or selfishness lives within, it will show. But if your heart is filled with love, humility, and grace, your words will reveal that too.

3. Words release wisdom

Proverbs 10:13 says, “Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding.” When someone treasures knowledge, their words reflect depth and discernment.

We’ve all been around people whose words lift us up and make us think more clearly. They don’t just talk—they teach, inspire, and encourage. Their wisdom flows naturally because it comes from a heart that values truth and understanding.

Reflection:

Think back over your conversations this past week.

• Were your words life-giving or draining?

• What do your words reveal about your heart?

• Do others leave your presence feeling wiser, encouraged, or closer to God because of what you said?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, help me to see the power of my words. Purify my heart so that my speech reflects life, love, and wisdom. Let everything that proceeds from my mouth draw others closer to You. Amen.
