TOTALLY GOD/TOTALLY HUMAN

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.

1 John 1:1-4 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The opening greeting from the letter of 1 John is packed with truths that we must be careful not to simply run past. First, we are told that Jesus was God. Jesus “existed from the beginning.” Jesus was not just a good man, a prophet, a miracle worker, or a great teacher. Jesus was and is God. This is unique feature in the teaching of Christianity—we believe God came to earth in human form. That brings us to the second truth, Jesus was God wrapped in human flesh. The writer of this book stated that he “saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands.” Jesus was not some ghost or mythical being. Jesus was totally human and totally God. This is hard for our human minds to comprehend but we must surrender our limited understanding. There is an old adage, “Never buy a Chevy from a salesman who drives a Ford.” If the brand of car is not good enough for the salesman, why would you want to purchase it. The point is that the Jesus we read about in the Bible was a Jesus the writers witnessed themselves and came to understand that He was the Son of God, Savior, and Redeemer of mankind. Because Jesus became human it means whatever you and I face today Jesus understands. He understands our hurts, frustrations, fears, and failures. Jesus became one of us. Jesus is also the “Word of life” and “eternal life.” When we read about Jesus in the Bible, we are reading from people who were first-hand witnesses of who He was and what He did. They wrote it down, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so that we could understand God’s life. God’s life was lived out in Jesus. Take a moment today and give praise to Jesus for Who He is.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I believe that You are the Son of God, Savior of the World, King of kings, and Lord of lords. You are my Redeemer, Provider, and Protector. You died so that I might live. Thanks for coming to earth so I could go to heaven.
