ENDURANCE IN THE STRUGGLE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.”

Romans 5:3 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

After celebrating our peace with God and our "All-Access Pass" into His grace (Romans 5:1–2), Paul hits us with a sudden, challenging shift. He turns his attention directly to the hard reality of earthly struggles.

Rejoicing in the middle of pain makes zero sense to the world, but for a believer walking by faith, it is the secret to deep spiritual growth.

1. Rejoicing IN the Problem (Not FOR It)

Paul writes, "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials." These words echo James, who wrote: "Count it all joy when you fall into various trials" (James 1:2).

Notice carefully what Paul is—and isn't—saying:

  • We do not rejoice FOR the problem. We don't celebrate a car accident, a pink slip at work, or a difficult medical diagnosis.

  • We choose to rejoice IN the problem. We maintain a thankful, worshipful attitude because we know the God who holds us inside the storm.

Too many people allow shifting circumstances to dictate their emotional temperature. If the bills are paid and everyone is healthy, they worship; if a storm hits, praise vanishes. But mature followers of Christ choose to worship God regardless of their circumstances because His character never changes.

2. We Rejoice Because of What We Know

Why can a believer maintain joy during a trial? Because of what we know. We know a truth the world often forgets spiritual growth rarely happens without struggle.

The Gym Analogy:

I go to the gym at least four times a week to work out. I follow a routine that forces me to exert energy and push my body. To be honest, there are certain exercise machines I really dislike because they hurt! I finish the repetitions anyway. Why? Because I know that the only way to strengthen a muscle is to push it beyond what is comfortable. I’m not working out to show off; I’m building muscle to support my body, increase my stamina, and stay flexible as I age.

There is no physical gain without a little pain. The exact same law applies to our spiritual lives—endurance is a muscle built under resistance.

3. Finding the Opportunity in Every Trial

God never wastes our pain. Hidden inside every struggle is a divine opportunity for growth, though it often takes eyes of faith to spot it.

Faith assures us that God specializes in turning trials into testimonies of His grace. Our spiritual maturity, sense of purpose, and effectiveness for the Kingdom are forged in the very fires we have survived and learned from.

Growth through pain is not automatic; it requires a deliberate choice:

  • Bitter People: Some choose to use their struggles as an excuse to throw a pity party, complain, and harbor resentment against God and others. They end up miserable, stuck, and bitter.

  • Better People: Believers choose to look for the lesson, asking: "Lord, what are You teaching me in this season?"

4. Problems Are the Pathway to Endurance

You don't have to win every earthly battle or come out on top of every situation. Sometimes, success simply means holding on for one more day in His strength.

Every time you face a furnace of trial and come out still breathing on the other side, you win. The pressure has expanded your capacity to endure.

The Exodus Principle:

One of my favorite Old Testament passages is found in Exodus 1:12. Pharaoh grew terrified of how fast the children of Israel were multiplying, so he forced them into hard labor and heavy slavery to break them.

But the Bible records an amazing outcome: "The more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew."

This is the promise we should make in times of trouble! The enemy may bring the pressure, but God uses that very pressure to make us stronger. Every trial gives you another testimony, and every battle expands your capacity to stand.

Reflection & Application

  • What is your default attitude in a crisis? Do you tend to fall into complaining and bitterness, or do you choose to look for God's presence and worship Him through the pain?

  • Are you looking for the lesson inside the struggle? Instead of asking "Why is this happening to me?", are you asking "Holy Spirit, what are You building in me through this?"

  • Are you allowing God to build your spiritual stamina? How can you apply the "Exodus Principle" to a difficult situation you are facing right now?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, teach me how to grow through every problem and trial I face. I choose to believe that through You, I am more than a conqueror and nothing in this world can defeat my soul.

Forgive me for the times I've allowed hard circumstances to steal my worship or breed bitterness in my heart. Shift my focus away from complaining and anchor my heart in Your promises.

Use every struggle to build spiritual muscle, stamina, and endurance in my life. Turn my hardest tests into powerful testimonies that bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
