SIN’S SLIPPERY SLIDE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.”

Romans 1:29–32 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

What happens when we trade the truth of God for a lie (Romans 1:25)? The result is never static—it is a continuous, downward slide into deeper compromise.

Paul concludes the first chapter of Romans by painting a raw, unvarnished picture of human nature when it operates completely severed from God’s truth.

1. Inventing New Ways to Sin

Paul makes a fascinating observation in verse 30: "they invent new ways of sinning."

The enemy’s tactic from the beginning has been to steal, kill, and destroy. He whispers the age-old lie that God’s Word is restrictive, telling us: "You don't have to follow those ancient rules. You are the exception. You can color outside the lines."

Once we bite on one "small" compromise, a door unlocks in our hearts. Little by little, we rationalize further step-outs:

  • Sin entices us by offering a fleeting moment of excitement and a quick dopamine rush.

  • But the thrill fades fast, leaving behind an empty void that demands more and more to feel satisfied.

The landscape Paul describes is grim—greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, gossip, insolence, and pride. Deep down, no one wants to live in a society where this kind of behavior is accepted as the norm.

2. Disobeying Parents: The Unexpected Speed Bump

Reading through this heavy, dark list of sins, verse 30 usually causes readers to hit a sudden speed bump. Right in the middle of murder, God-hating, and heartlessness, Paul inserts: "and they disobey their parents."

Why would Paul place family rebellion alongside such extreme sins? Because Paul understood that respect for authority begins in the home.

The fifth commandment—"Honor your father and your mother" (Exodus 20:12)—is the foundational training ground for learning how to submit to God’s authority. When a culture casts aside honor and obedience at the family table, it tears the foundational fabric of society, opening the door to widespread lawlessness.

3. Misery Loves Company

Paul wraps up chapter 1 with a sobering reality: sinful human nature hates to sin alone.

When people choose to walk away from God’s boundaries, they naturally seek out others to join them. Having company makes us feel validated in our choices, softening the sting of a guilty conscience.

This dynamic often starts early in life:

  • As a young teenager, there were things my friends at school were doing that I desperately wanted to do. When my mom said "no" because it wasn't right, my go-to response was: "But Mom, everybody is doing it!"

  • To which my mom would always reply: "If everyone else was jumping off a building, would you jump, too?"

To be completely honest, at that age, the desire to fit in with the crowd was so overwhelming that I probably would have given jumping some serious thought!

That is precisely why choosing our close inner circle is so vital. If we surround ourselves with people who ignore God's boundaries, we will inevitably be drawn toward the edge of the cliff.

Sin is Always Progressive

Paul’s intention in Romans 1 is not just to condemn the pagan world; he is showing us where compromise leads.

Nobody sets out on day one aiming to become heartless, malicious, or destructive. Sin is inherently progressive. The moment we reject God's objective truth and decide we can determine right and wrong for ourselves, the slope becomes dangerously slick.

Sadly, this isn't just a problem for those outside the faith. Over decades of ministry, I have watched spiritual leaders allow "small" compromises into their private lives. Unaddressed, those subtle footholds eventually grew into landslide failures that destroyed ministries, marriages, and families.

Reflection & Application

  • Are you fully committed to all of God's Word? Are you submitting to the scriptures that challenge and convict you, or only the parts that are easy and comfortable?

  • Are there "small" compromises in your life? Are you honoring those in authority over you? Are you guarding your mouth against gossip and subtle backstabbing?

  • Who has your ear? Are your closest friends helping you draw nearer to Jesus, or are they subtly encouraging you to rationalize compromise?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, make Your Word the absolute standard for my daily life. Give me an attentive, tender heart that responds quickly to Your gentle conviction whenever I let subtle compromises creep into my thinking or behavior.

Guard my mouth against gossip, pride, and uncharitable words. Teach me to walk in genuine honor toward authority and to reflect Your character in all my relationships.

Give me discernment as I choose my closest friends. Surround me with people who love Your truth and encourage me to run hard after You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
