THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KNOW AND DO

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT

In his ongoing message to the Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome, Paul continues to drive home a vital, foundational truth: there is a massive difference between knowing what is right and doing what is right.

Head knowledge can easily breed spiritual pride, but God measures the true condition of our hearts by our obedience.

1. Proud of the Law, But Missing the Heart

In traditional Jewish culture, boys began formal Torah study at a very young age—around 5 or 6 years old. They were expected to memorize key passages, prayers, and commandments, with deeper study ramping up as they approached their bar mitzvah at age 13.

The Jewish believers in Rome were very proud of their extensive knowledge of the Scriptures. But Paul delivers a loving wake-up call: simply hearing, reading, or memorizing God’s Law doesn't make anyone right in His sight.

Knowing the rules means nothing if our daily lives don't reflect the God who gave them.

2. God’s Law Written on the Heart

Because humanity was created in the image of God, every person carries a foundational awareness of right and wrong—a conscience.

When we place our faith in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, something radical happens: the Holy Spirit comes to indwell us. We are born again with a brand-new heart that naturally desires to please God.

Paul notes that Gentiles—who had never studied the Torah—were often found "instinctively" obeying God's moral principles. That reveals the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit inside a believer: He guides us from within, directing our actions even when we don't fully understand why we are being prompted to make a certain choice.

The Sticky Notes Analogy:

When our boys were very young, my wife Cindy went away for a 72-hour women’s retreat. I was suddenly staring at three days as a solo dad with two energetic toddlers!

To help me survive, Cindy left pages of detailed notes. She placed sticky notes on the washing machine, the pantry, and all over the kitchen, outlining what needed to be done and when. I read and re-read those notes constantly to make sure I was a good father.

The moment Cindy walked back through the front door; I threw the sticky notes in the trash. I didn’t need the sticky notes anymore because Cindy was home. If I had a question, I could ask her directly.

The Old Testament Law was like God's written pages of directions. When Jesus came, He didn't abolish the Law—He fulfilled it. After His ascension, God sent the Holy Spirit to live inside every believer as our personal Teacher and Guide. We still need the written Word to align our minds with how God thinks, but now we have the Holy Spirit living within us, constantly whispering, prompting, and nudging us in the right direction.

3. Jesus Will Judge Our Secret Lives

Paul ends this section with a sobering reminder: nothing is hidden from God. He sees our secret thoughts, our private words, and the actions we try to conceal behind closed doors.

Rather than living in fear or attempting to hide our mistakes, we should be quick to confess and repent:

• Repentance sounds like: "Lord, I messed up. I was wrong, and I need Your forgiveness. Help me change this behavior."

• Too often, people only feel regret when the consequences of their choices start showing up.

Over decades of ministry, I’ve had many people ask me to pray for them after they sowed seeds of disobedience and saw the bad harvest beginning to grow. They wanted to pray for a crop failure instead of asking God for a change of heart.

God exposes our secret sins not to destroy us, but to heal us—breaking the destructive behavior patterns so we can walk in freedom.

Reflection & Application

• Are you relying on head knowledge or heart obedience? Do you catch yourself feeling spiritual simply because you know what the Bible says, or are you actively letting Scripture shape your actions?

• Are you listening to the Holy Spirit's nudges? When the Spirit gives you an internal prompt to show kindness, walk away from temptation, or speak the truth, do you obey His voice?

• Are there hidden areas in your life? Is there a secret habit, thought pattern, or choice you need to stop hiding and bring into the light through honest confession and repentance?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I ask You to be my personal Teacher, Guide, and Counselor today. Forgive me for the times I have relied solely on head knowledge while ignoring Your gentle voice speaking to my heart.

Train my mind through Your written Word and sharpen my ears to hear Your daily direction. Give me a tender conscience that responds quickly whenever You point out an area that needs alignment with Your truth.

Search my secret life and expose anything I've tried to hide in the dark. Grant me the courage to repent honestly—not just to avoid consequences, but because I desire a pure heart that pleases You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
