A CIRCUMCISED HEART

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God declare them to be his own people? In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God’s law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God’s law but don’t obey it. For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Paul presses hard against his Jewish readers who relied on their physical heritage and the covenant mark of circumcision as a spiritual guarantee. He forces them—and us—to answer an essential question: Who are the true people of God?

Paul’s answer turns religious pride completely upside down: God has always been after our hearts, not just our heritage or external rituals.

1. Belonging Requires Obedience, Not Just Heritage

Physical lineage and religious ceremonies do not automatically grant us a right standing before God. Knowing the Bible, attending church, or growing up in a Christian home cannot take the place of a life submitted to God’s authority.

I know people who could quote endless Scripture always seemed to have a ready excuse for why their daily behavior didn't line up with the Word. It is tragic when we use religious knowledge to attack others while ignoring our own lack of love.

Can we truly claim to be holy if we come across as bitter, mean, and judgmental toward everyone who disagrees with us?

Jesus made it simple: the entire Law hangs on two primary commandments—Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37–40). If we follow a long list of external regulations about dress, diet, and behavior, but fail to show Christlike love, our religious routine voids our testimony as His followers.

2. Real Obedience Requires a Supernatural Heart Change

True obedience to God cannot be manufactured by sheer willpower, self-control, or personal discipline. Relying on a fleshly effort eventually leads to legalism, spiritual pride, and an arrogant attitude that looks down on others.

To truly follow Jesus, we must allow the Holy Spirit to perform a supernatural operation on our souls: a circumcision of the heart.

The Holy Spirit replaces our rigid, selfish hearts with hearts that are submissive, humble, and eager to serve. A transformed heart deals with our motivation:

• We will still make mistakes, we are human.

• But there is a massive difference between a head mistake and a heart mistake.

• When our hearts are truly transformed by the Spirit, our underlying motivation is to honor God, even when we stumble.

3. The Mark of a Changed Heart: Seeking God's Approval

How can we test our true heart motivation? By asking a simple question: Whose praise am I chasing?

When I first entered pastoral ministry, I struggled with being a people-pleaser. I desperately wanted people to like me. But I quickly discovered a frustrating truth: the harder I tried to get people to like me, the less respect I seemed to win.

Over time, the Lord taught me a vital lesson: my first priority must always be to please God.

Seeking God’s approval doesn't mean treating people poorly or ignoring their needs. I still want to love and serve others well—even when they choose not to love me back. But I cannot allow human opinion to dictate my convictions or direct my choices. At the end of my life, I don't need the applause of the crowd; I only want to hear my Heavenly Father say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant!"

Reflection & Application

• Is your obedience driven by love or duty? Are you following God out of a genuine love for Him and others, or are you just trying to check off religious boxes?

• Have you experienced a "circumcision of the heart"? Are you relying on self-discipline to look holy, or are you daily yielding to the Holy Spirit to change your desires from the inside out?

• Whose approval matters most to you? Are there areas in your life where you are compromising God's clear truth just to keep peace with people or earn their praise?

TODAY'S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, perform a fresh work in my heart today. Cut away every trace of self-righteousness, religious pride, and people-pleasing that hides within me.

Show me any area where I have substituted external routine for genuine, loving obedience. Give me a humble, transformed heart that longs to serve others and reflect the character of Jesus.

Set me free from the trap of chasing human approval. Make it the single burning desire of my life to bring joy to My Heavenly Father and walk faithfully in His truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
