THE GOOD SHEPHERD

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep… I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me… So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.”
John 10:11, 14–15 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd.
All through Scripture, people are compared to sheep—an image that highlights our tendency to wander, our vulnerability, and our limited perspective. Sheep easily drift off in search of something appealing. They can’t defend themselves. They can’t see far. And they often follow whatever is in front of them, even if it leads to danger.
That’s why sheep need a shepherd.
A good shepherd leads them to what nourishes, stands guard when danger comes, and keeps them close so they don’t lose their way. Over time the sheep learn his voice. They follow because they trust him.
In Jesus’ day, a shepherd would bring the flock into a small enclosure at night, then position himself in the single opening. He literally became the “door”—lying down across the entrance so nothing could harm the sheep. That is the image Jesus uses to describe His care: He places Himself between us and what would destroy us.
From this passage we see:
1. Jesus Is Our Good Shepherd
He’s not a hired hand who cares only when convenient. He puts His sheep first—so much so that He gave His life to rescue us.
2. Jesus Knows His Sheep
The word “know” here describes deep, personal relationship—not casual familiarity. It’s the difference between knowing a public figure’s name and knowing someone you love. That’s how fully Jesus knows you.
3. The Sheep Know Jesus
This relationship goes both ways. He invites us to recognize His voice, trust His guidance, and walk closely with Him. We can experience a depth of relationship with Him far richer than we often realize.
How do we know Jesus as our Good Shepherd?
By slowing down, listening, and drawing near. By being with Him in prayer, in His Word, and in daily dependence.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me step into a deeper relationship with Jesus today. Help me know His voice, trust His leadership, and follow Him as my Good Shepherd.
