CHOOSE TO BE MORE GENEROUS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“The crowds asked, “What should we do?” John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”

Luke 3:10-11 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

We are talking about setting goals for the new year. We are looking at the ministry of John the Baptist and three groups of people who asked the question, “What should we do?”

The challenge as we look at a new year is, “What should we do?”

John’s response to the crowd of people could be summed up in two words, “Be generous.”

Generosity it not often included in our goal setting, but I propose we should consider setting goals for our generosity. When we become a generous people we are becoming more like God. Our God is a giving God.

When we let generosity be simply spontaneous and unplanned we can drift into greed and selfishness. Intentional generosity is what we want in our lives.

There is a verse in Proverbs 31 that talks about the traits of a virtuous woman. In verse 20 we read, “She extends her hands to the poor, and she stretches out her hands to the needy.”

Let’s examine this passage a moment. Notice the words “extends” and “stretches.” These are words that imply going beyond what is comfortable. Choosing to stretch ourselves is how growth happens in our lives.

If I always do what I’ve always done I will always get what I’ve always gotten. That is an adage that isn’t fully true. There is the law of diminishing returns. If I always do what I’ve always done I will eventually stop getting any positive results at all.

Without stretching there is no growth. To build muscle in my physical body I have to be willing to push myself further and use more weight and/or reps in order to increase my strength.

The same is true in our generosity. If we want to grow more like Jesus in 2026, we must decide we will stretch our generosity muscles to a new dimension.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit I need Your help. Show me how to believe You for the ability to be more generous with my time, talent, and treasure. Help me use the resources You have entrusted with me to advance Your kingdom through my life.

“Scroll down to share what you feel God is saying based on today’s reading.”
