WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’
He replied, ‘Collect no more taxes than the government requires.’”
Luke 3:12–13 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Tax collectors sat at the bottom of the social ladder. They were viewed as traitors and thieves—Jews who collected money from fellow Jews on behalf of Rome. The government set the amount they were required to collect, but many inflated that amount to line their own pockets.
When these tax collectors heard John the Baptist preach, they asked a sincere question: “What should we do?”
John’s answer was simple and direct: “Collect no more than you are required.”
This was a call to honesty. Repentance wasn’t merely emotional—it was practical. Their encounter with God was meant to change the way they worked.
The same is true for us. Following Jesus should shape how we show up on the job. One of the greatest opportunities we have to represent the Kingdom of God is in our everyday work.
Do we arrive on time and give a full day’s effort?
Are we known as honest people, even when cutting corners would be easy?
Do we refuse to justify wrongdoing just because “everyone else is doing it”?
And what about our attitude? Are we a positive presence in our workplace? Do people notice something different about how we carry ourselves because we belong to Christ?
The apostle Paul writes, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people” (Colossians 3:23, NLT). This speaks directly to our attitude. Attitude matters. People notice not only what we do, but how we do it.
Sloppy work can undermine a testimony. Another translation says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Colossians 3:23, NIV). Our work should reflect excellence and enthusiasm. Our jobs are a gift from God—an avenue to provide, to serve, and to shine His light.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me to see my work as a gift from You. Teach me to view every task as an opportunity to honor You and reflect Your Kingdom. Make me productive, honest, and enthusiastic in all that I do.
