REST AND RENEWAL
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
There is strength in rest. We don’t practice rest much in our modern world. I know of a lot of people who seem to thrive on always being busy. It seems the idea of having a side hustle is a badge of honor. People are working 45 to 50 hours a week on their main job and then another 30 hours on their side hustle. Jesus is not encouraging us to be lazy. He says we need to take His yoke because it is easy to bear, and the burden is light. He expects us to work and strive for excellence. However, Jesus wants us to be sure that the motivation for our work is the proper motivation. He wants us to do it for the right reason. God’s plan for our lives is not overwhelming. It will include sacrifice and hard work, but it will also include times of rest and renewal. God chose to rest on the seventh day as an example to all of us. We should have a rhythm of life that allows times of rest and renewal. I believe it is important to have a daily time of rest and renewal as well as extended times on a regular basis. I have found that if I don’t plan for times of rest and renewal, I miss those opportunities. I must be intentional in order to keep my life in balance.
Holy Spirit please help me to learn to schedule times for rest and renewal. Show me what it looks like to rest in You.
