WE CAN ALWAYS TURN TO JESUS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Today we turn our attention to the title “Counselor.”
The Hebrew word used here is yaats, which carries the idea of giving sound advice, offering guidance, formulating a plan, and providing wise direction (Strong’s Hebrew 3289).
In our world, the word counselor is used in two main ways. The first refers to someone who helps us navigate personal struggles. When I was young, there were some in the church who suggested you didn’t need a counselor—just pray more. These tended to be the same voices that frowned upon going to a medical doctor or taking medicine. But Scripture teaches something different: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22, NIV). Cindy and I have gained tremendous help during challenging seasons through godly, professional counseling.
The second use of the word counselor describes an attorney—our “legal counsel.” I’ve needed legal counsel in several situations over the years, and without it, I would have been in real trouble.
Against this backdrop, Isaiah tells us that Jesus is our Counselor. He is the One we can always turn to for direction, insight, and clarity. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all…” That verse has been a lifeline for me—I often feel like I need all the help I can get in the wisdom department!
Paul adds, “In him (Jesus) lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). Think about that: everything you and I truly need to know can be found in Him. He is our divine Counselor.
Of course, we still need earthly counselors, because we can’t always discern everything Jesus is trying to show us. Just as we benefit from pastors and teachers, we benefit from trained, Spirit-filled counselors who are grounded in God’s Word. What we must avoid is seeking counsel from those who believe that human wisdom is all-sufficient.
One of the greatest gifts of having Jesus as our Counselor is that He is always available. At any moment, day or night, we can pause and ask Him for guidance.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to be my Counselor. Help me to turn to You first in every situation and to trust the wisdom You provide.
