ESTABLISH THE WORK OF OUR HANDS
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom… Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives… And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Scholars credit Moses as the human author behind the majestic words of Psalm 90. Written near the twilight of his journey, this prayer serves as a profound meditation on the nature of reality. Moses contrasts a timeless, eternal God with fragile human beings who are strictly bound to the ticking of a clock.
After eighty years of wandering through the shifting desert sands, buried under the heavy weight of leadership, Moses looks back and leaves us three eternal coordinates to guide our own brief lifetimes:
1. The Raw Reality of Time
In verse 12, Moses famously asks God to “teach us to number our days.” It is incredibly easy to live in a state of spiritual amnesia, forgetting just how rapidly our lives evaporate. We fill our calendars with endless busyness, running from one obligation to the next, often failing to notice the years slipping through our fingers. True wisdom begins when we stop treating our days as an infinite resource and realize that every single 24-hour cycle is a precious gift to be strictly stewarded.
2. The Anchor of an Unchanging Love
Think about the staggering depth of Moses writing verse 14: “Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love.” Moses was a man who knew the bitter sting of failure. In his youth, his unbridled anger led to a murder. In his old age, his frustration caused him to strike the rock, costing him his entrance into the Promised Land. For forty years, he was trapped in a desert with millions of ungrateful people who constantly complained about God’s care.
Yet, looking at the scars of his past, Moses does not write a psalm of bitterness or regret. He writes about a love that is completely unfailing. No matter what trials we endure, what messes we manufacture, or what heartbreaks others inflict upon us, God's baseline nature remains unchanged. He does not love you because you are perfect; He loves you because He is Love.
3. The Endurance of a True Legacy
Moses closes his psalm with a passionate, double-emphasized plea: “Yes, make our efforts successful!” Other translations beautifully render this as, “Establish the work of our hands.”
Moses spent four grueling decades leading a traumatized community out of Egyptian slavery and pointing them toward a future they couldn't yet see. He never got to step foot across the Jordan River himself. Yet, thousands of years later, the descendants of that very same wilderness crowd still thrive as a sovereign nation in that exact Promised Land. The work of Moses’ hands was undeniably established. True legacy means planting seeds for trees under whose shade you may never sit.
Putting It into Practice
As we ponder Moses' final reflections, the Holy Spirit challenges us to evaluate how we are investing our lives across three practical fronts:
The Stewardship of Time: How are you actively protecting your days from being wasted on things that carry zero eternal value? In my years of walking with the Lord, I have learned to manage my life using a clear calendar and a daily, prioritized task list. I had to accept a long time ago that I would never get everything done—and that is okay. The secret is learning to prioritize what is truly important for today, allowing you to rest your head on the pillow at night with deep, peaceful confidence.
The Acceptance of Love: Are you still exhausting yourself trying to earn God’s approval, or have you learned to simply receive His daily affection? When you finally grasp that you are fully, unconditionally loved by the Creator of the universe, it radically alters how you view yourself. Security in His love frees you from the trap of people-pleasing and empowers you to love the difficult people around you.
The Vision for Legacy: Are you living with a long-term, generational perspective? Do you have an active, intentional plan for how your life will positively impact your children, your grandchildren, your local church, and your community? Your daily habits are currently building the monument people will look at when you are gone.
Questions for Reflection
Time Audit: If I look honestly at my weekly screen time, my hobbies, and my daily routine, am I treating my time like a vapor or an endless playground? What do I need to cut out to protect what matters most?
Identity Check: Am I functioning out of a deficit, constantly seeking validation from my performance or other people's opinions, instead of being satisfied each morning by God's unfailing love?
Handiwork Request: If God were to permanently freeze and establish the work I did over the last month, what kind of legacy would be left behind for the next generation?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, teach me to accurately number my days so that I can cultivate a heart of true wisdom. Forgive me for wasting precious time on worldly distractions that carry no eternal weight. Satisfy my soul with Your deep, unfailing love every single morning so that I can face life's challenges with joy. Guide the work of my hands today, and let my words, my finances, and my actions leave a holy legacy that outlasts my time on this earth. Amen.
