DAY 29,201

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. 'This is amazing,' Moses said to himself. 'Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.' When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, 'Moses! Moses!' 'Here I am!' Moses replied.”

Exodus 3:1-4 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Today we arrive at the ultimate turning point in Moses’ life. Consider the math of his journey up to this exact moment:

  • The First 14,600 Days (40 Years): Lived in the ultimate comfort, luxury, and prestige of Pharaoh’s palace.

  • The Next 14,600 Days (40 Years): Lived as a forgotten fugitive, hiding in a harsh wilderness and tending someone else's sheep.

But on Day 29,201, everything changed. An ordinary workday in the desert suddenly collided with eternity. In this historic encounter, God reveals a masterclass on how He transforms a person and a nation.

1. The Power of a Cry

God had promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit Canaan, but Israel's stay in Egypt had degenerated from a place of privilege into a nightmare of slavery. In their agony, the people cried out to God—and God listened (Exodus 2:23-25). Heaven moves when God’s people pray. Your current suffering is never silent before the throne of God.

2. The Catalyst of Curiosity

Notice that God didn’t yell across the desert to grab Moses' attention. He simply set a bush on fire without consuming it. God waited to see if Moses would notice. Moses’ curiosity drove him to take a closer look, and only then did God call his name. Holy curiosity is often the launchpad for spiritual growth.

A Note on the Fire: Throughout Scripture, fire represents the pure, unvarnished presence of God—from the burning bush to the smoke on Mount Sinai, to the tongues of flame at Pentecost. Fire purifies. Before we can do God's work, we must allow His fire to cleanse us.

3. The Unconventional Calling

Moses’ resume was a mess: he was a forty-year-old cold case murderer, an exiled prince, and a broke shepherd. Yet, God saw potential where Moses only saw failure. When God laid out the assignment, Moses spent the rest of the chapter making excuses. But God was unbothered by his weaknesses. As the old saying goes: God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

4. The Revelation of the Name

Moses asked God, "Who should I say sent me?" God responded with His covenant identity: "I AM WHO I AM." He revealed Himself as Yahweh—the self-existent, unchanging, promise-keeping God. Later, Israel would learn the character of God through His compound names (like Jehovah-Jireh, The Lord Our Provider). We must intimately know who God is before we can effectively lead for Him.

5. The Blueprint and the Mystery

God laid out a clear three-part promise for the rescue mission: Pharaoh will let you go, you will worship on this very mountain, and the Egyptians will give you wealth when you leave.

But notice what God left out. He didn’t mention the ten plagues, the terrifying Red Sea corner, or the fact that the Israelites would turn on Moses the moment things got difficult. God rarely gives us the granular details of the middle, because following Him is a journey of faith, not sight. He gives us just enough light for the next step.

Personal Application

At seventy years old, I’ve learned that Day 29,201 can happen at any time. You are never too old, too hidden, or too far gone for God to disrupt your ordinary routine with a holy calling.

Are you looking for “burning bushes" in your daily life? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone when God calls your name, even if you feel completely inadequate? Trust the God who knows your name, holds the blueprint, and functions perfectly in the middle of the mystery.

Questions for Reflection

  • The Cry: Am I consistently crying out to God in prayer, or am I just complaining about my circumstances?

  • The Curiosity: Am I actively looking for where God is working around me today?

  • The Calling: What excuses am I making to avoid the task God has clearly prompted me to do?

  • The Mystery: Am I at peace with not knowing all the details of God's plan, if I know the One who holds the plan?

TODAY'S PRAYER

Holy Spirit please make me a person of deep, urgent prayer. Ignite my curiosity so that I never miss Your presence moving in my daily life. I believe You have a sovereign plan for me, and I refuse to let my past failures or current inadequacies stand in the way of Your calling. Reveal Your character to me more deeply today. Amen.
