THE DANGER OF A HARDENED HEART

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“They wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame.”
Ephesians 4:18-19 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
What happens when we repeatedly reject the conviction of the Holy Spirit? Paul paints a sobering picture of "Gentile Living”, a life defined by darkness, confusion, and a loss of spiritual sensation.
1. The Darkness of a Closed Mind
Paul says their "minds are full of darkness." This isn't because they lack intelligence, but because they have closed their minds to the light of God’s Word. Truth is often uncomfortable. As Mark Twain famously said: “It’s not the things in the Bible I don’t understand that bother me, it is the things I do understand.”
When we close our minds to non-negotiable Truth, we remove the only light capable of guiding us. Without "guardrails," human nature naturally slides into selfishness and immorality. We end up doing "what is right in our own eyes," which historically always leads to the destruction of both the individual and society.
2. The Leprosy of a Hardened Heart
This is perhaps the most dangerous stage of spiritual decline. In the Bible, leprosy made a person "unclean" and isolated. Today, we know that leprosy primarily attacks the nerves. A person with leprosy loses the ability to feel touch, temperature, or pain. They can severely burn themselves and never realize it because they have lost their sense of feeling.
The Holy Spirit is your spiritual nervous system. The Spirit’s conviction is what allows you to sense when you are off track. When you repeatedly say "no" to that nudge, your heart becomes calloused. You develop "Spiritual Leprosy." You become numb to the warning signs, heading toward destruction without even realizing you are being "burned."
3. The Loss of Shame
The final result of this numbness is a life with "no sense of shame." When the "nerves" are dead, impurity and lustful pleasure no longer feel wrong—they just feel empty. However, there is a way back.
The Good News: The Divine Heart Transplant
You don't have to stay numb. God makes a staggering promise to anyone willing to turn back to Him:
“I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” — Ezekiel 36:26
If you feel the "nudge" of the Spirit today—even a small one—rejoice! It means you still have feeling. Respond to it now before the callous grows thicker.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, thank You for being my spiritual nervous system. Forgive me for the times I have ignored Your warnings and hardened my heart to Your Truth. I don't want to be numb. Take away my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh—one that is sensitive, responsive, and deeply in love with Your presence. Amen.
