WE HAVE AN ETERNAL HOME IN HEAVEN

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.

Galatians 1:4-5 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Here is the story of why Easter is such an amazing celebration— “Jesus gave his life for our sins” so that He could “rescue us from this evil world in which we live.”

We don’t have to think very long to notice the evil in our world. The anger, injustice, violence, addiction, abuse, pain, sickness, and poverty of our world is real. Some question how there can be a loving God with so much pain. As I write this devotion, I just had a conversation with a pastor friend who was on his way with his wife to the hospital to comfort a young couple who were just informed their baby will be still born. They had tried for years to have a child and were so excited when they found out they were expecting—now their world has caved in.

Pain, disappointment, frustration, and confusion are very real in this world. Not because there is no loving God in charge—but because of the sin of humanity. Sin brought in a virus that has corrupted the human equation. Even nature itself is corrupted—thus we have earthquakes, floods, and the like.

But Jesus gave His life for sin. On the cross there was a divine exchange—Jesus traded His righteousness for our sinfulness. He took our sins and made His righteousness available to us. When we receive the righteousness of Jesus, we are free from the destruction of this world.

That doesn’t mean we avoid the consequences of living in a sin-sick world. Jesus told us in this world we will have trouble. But we can live with the knowledge that this world is not our home. We have an eternal destiny in another world. Heaven is our eternal home. All this is temporary.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me remember the eternal home I have in heaven. Help me to accept Your righteousness and live in that freedom. Help me to invite others into Your kingdom.
