MOVING FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”
Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is the "Grand Finale" of Ephesians four. Paul concludes his teaching on the "New Wardrobe" by giving us a definitive list of what to throw in the trash and what to pull out of the closet. He moves from Negative Eviction to Positive Replacement.
Paul uses a strong Greek verb for "Get rid of" (arethētō), which means to "lift up and carry away." These aren't just "bad moods"; they are spiritual squatters that have no legal right to live in a child of God.
1. The Five-Point Eviction Notice
Notice the progression of these toxic traits. When you don't catch one, it will lead to the next:
Bitterness: The settled, cold resentment in the heart.
Rage: The sudden "explosion" of temper.
Anger: The internal "boiling" that stays with you.
Harsh Words: When the internal anger leaks out of your mouth.
Slander: When you use your words to intentionally damage someone’s reputation.
2. The Three-Point Replacement
You cannot just leave your heart empty; you must fill it with the nature of Christ. Paul gives us the "Big Three":
Kindness: Being "useful" or "helpful" to others.
Tenderheartedness: Having a "spiritually sensitive" nervous system (the opposite of the "Spiritual Leprosy" we discussed earlier).
Forgiveness: Releasing the debt because your own debt has been cancelled.
3. The "Because" Factor
The most important part of this entire chapter is the last phrase: "...just as God through Christ has forgiven you." Our ability to forgive others is not based on how much they deserve it, but on how much we have already received. We don't forgive because we get grace; we forgive others because we are grace-filled.
We turn the “Vertical” forgiveness of God to us into a “Horizon” forgiveness to others around us.
The "Chapter 4" Graduation Check
As we finish this chapter, look back at your "walk.”
Is your mind Renewed?
Is your mouth Filtered?
Is your heart Tender?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I perform a 'clean sweep' of my heart today. I lift up and carry away every ounce of bitterness, rage, and slander. I refuse to give the enemy a foothold for one more second. Today, I put on Your kindness and Your tenderheartedness. Help me to forgive others with the same radical, scandalous grace that You have shown me. Amen.
