IMITATE THE FATHER

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.”
Ephesians 5:1–2 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul is shifting gears into a major challenge: how to remain pure in an impure world. His solution isn't a list of rules, but a call to imitation.
The Mirror of the Father
Why do we imitate God? Because we are His "dear children." If you have ever watched a toddler follow their father around, wearing his oversized shoes or mimicking his walk, you know that imitation is the most natural expression of love. We don't imitate God to become His children; we do it because we already are.
God gave us the Bible to provide a picture of His character, and then He sent Jesus—God "wrapped in human flesh"—to show us exactly how that character interacts with a broken world. To stay pure, we must keep our eyes fixed on the Original.
1. Imitate His Unfiltered Love
Jesus did not limit His love to the "lovely." He offered the same radical grace to the prostitute and the tax collector as He did to the fisherman. He sat by a well and spoke freely to a Samaritan woman with a checkered past (five divorces).
The Challenge: When we choose to see every human being as worth love and respect—regardless of their "file"—we are successfully imitating Jesus.
2. Imitate His Sacrificial Giving
God is not a hoarder; He is a Giver. He loved the world so much that He gave His only Son. Jesus didn't just give a "donation"; He offered Himself as a sacrifice.
The Challenge: Most people give when they think they’ll get something back. But God-like giving is giving without the "return on investment" mindset. When you give your time, talent, or treasure without needing credit or repayment, you are walking in the "pleasing aroma" of Christ.
This Week’s Identity Check
Ask yourself: If someone watched my life this week, would they recognize my Father’s "facial features" in my actions?
The Move: Identify one person this week who is "unlovely" or can offer you nothing in return. Intentionally touch their life with a tangible act of sacrificial love.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, show me the people in my world who need to be touched by Your love. Remove the "blindfold of ego" that keeps me focused on my own needs. Show me what I can do today to tangibly give Your love away, mirroring the heart of my Father. Amen.
