GRAFTED IN

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“I ask, then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin… So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have—the ones God has chosen—but the hearts of the rest were hardened.

Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it…

For if the roots of the tree are holy, the branches will be, too. But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off.

And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree…

Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.”

Romans 11:1, 7, 11–12, 16–17, 22–24 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Paul addresses a critical question concerning God's covenant loyalty: Has God permanently abandoned His ancient covenant people, Israel?

Paul answers with a resounding "Of course not!" He reveals how God’s sovereign plan turns human disobedience into a doorway of mercy for the whole world—grafting Gentiles into the family of God while preserving a way of restoration for Israel.

1. God Always Preserves a Remnant

To prove that God has not written off Israel, Paul provides two compelling examples:

  • Paul’s Own Conversion: Paul points to himself. He was a strict Pharisee from the tribe of Benjamin who fiercely opposed the early church. Yet, an encounter with the resurrected Christ completely transformed his life. If God could save the "chief of sinners," He was certainly not done with Israel.

  • Elijah’s Remnant (1 Kings 19): When the prophet Elijah sank into deep exhaustion and depression, he complained to God, "I am the only one left who is faithful to You." But God corrected him, revealing that He had preserved 7,000 faithful believers who had never bowed to Baal.

Even when an entire nation seems to turn its back on God's plan, God always preserves a faithful remnant through whom He continues His work.

2. Stumbling, But Not Beyond Recovery

Israel’s rejection of Jesus as Messiah was tragic, but Paul insists their stumble is not beyond recovery. God took their temporary disobedience and used it to accomplish two magnificent redemptive goals:

  1. Salvation Reached the Gentiles: The Gospel message went out to all nations, offering Gentiles direct access into right standing with God through Jesus Christ.

  2. Spiritual Jealousy: Seeing Gentiles enjoying intimate fellowship, peace, and covenant blessings with the God of Abraham was designed to provoke Israel to long for their own Messiah.

3. The Metaphor of the Cultivated Olive Tree

Paul paints a vivid picture of a cultivated olive tree to explain how God's family is structured:

  • The Holy Root: The patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—who walked with God by faith. The root of the tree is built on the covenant of faith.

  • The Broken Branches: The natural branches (unbelieving Israel) that were broken off due to disobedience and self-righteousness.

  • The Grafted Wild Branches: Gentile believers, who by nature were wild olive branches, grafted directly into the cultivated tree to draw nourishment from the root.

Paul issues a stern warning against Gentile spiritual arrogance: Do not boast over the natural branches! You do not support the root; the root supports you. You were grafted in by pure, unmerited grace through faith.

Living in Humble Gratitude

What does this deep theological reality mean for our daily walk?

  • Walk in Deep Humility: Salvation is not based on nationality, performance, or religious merit. We entered the family of God by faith alone, and we remain in the tree by abiding in Christ.

  • Pray for Israel: We should regularly pray for the Jewish people—that the veil would be lifted and their eyes opened to recognize Jesus as their long-awaited Messiah.

  • Beware of Religious Self-Reliance: Just as natural branches were cut off due to prideful unbelief, we must guard our hearts against falling back into rule-keeping and self-righteous performance.

Reflection & Application

  • Are you walking in humble gratitude for your adoption? Do you daily marvel at the grace that grafted a "wild branch" like you into God's covenant tree?

  • Are you praying for the unreached and for Israel? How often do you intercede for God's ancient people to recognize their Messiah?

  • Is your security anchored in faith or performance? Are you resting in the "kindness of God," or are you relying on your own spiritual discipline to maintain your standing?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus so that a wild olive branch like me could be grafted into Your covenant family. Thank You for allowing me to share in the rich nourishment of Your promises.

Guard my heart against spiritual pride, self-righteousness, or legalism. Keep me humble, grateful, and help me to rest completely in Your kindness and grace.

I pray today for the Jewish people across the world. Open their eyes to recognize Jesus as their true Messiah and fulfill Your promise to graft them back into their own tree. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
