SPEAK LIFE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless. The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.”
Proverbs 10:19–21 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are 90 verses in Proverbs that deal with our mouth, tongue, and words. Clearly, Solomon understood that if we want to live in wisdom, we must learn to use our words wisely.
In this passage, Solomon gives us three important truths about our words:
1. Wise people know when to be silent
One of my personal struggles growing up was that I talked too much. Over time—and with the help of wisdom and age—I’ve learned to better restrain my words. Still, there are moments when I speak when silence would have served better.
The truth is, the one who talks the most often says the least.
I’ve never once regretted the words I didn’t say.
Wisdom teaches us that silence can be powerful. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is to keep quiet and listen.
2. Wise words are precious
This is the balance we must learn—when to be silent and when to speak.
When words are rooted in wisdom, they are valuable—like silver. They enrich conversations, bring clarity, and add beauty to relationships.
Our words can either add value or drain it. Wise people choose words that build up, not tear down.
3. Wise words bring encouragement
Even when correction is needed, it can be given in a way that encourages rather than crushes. Wise words lift people up. They help others become their best selves.
If you want to have healthy relationships, choose to be an encourager. Nobody enjoys being around a constant critic—but everyone appreciates someone who speaks life.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, teach me when to speak and when to be silent. Help my words to carry wisdom, value, and encouragement. Let all that I say lift others up and bring honor to You. Amen.
