YOU BRING ME GREAT JOY

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

"One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, 'You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.'"

Mark 1:9–11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

As the earliest written Gospel, Mark skips the genealogies, the birth narratives, and the journey to Bethlehem. Drawing directly from Peter’s eyewitness accounts, Mark dives straight into the launch of Jesus’ public ministry—beginning at the Jordan River.

This pivotal event reveals three profound truths about Jesus and our own walk of faith:

Key Insights

1. Jesus Baptized to Set the Pattern

Because John’s baptism was a call to repentance, Jesus—who was completely without sin—did not need forgiveness. So why did He step into the water? Jesus was baptized to identify with humanity, fulfill all righteousness, and set an example for us. Water baptism serves as a public declaration of our faith—symbolizing the burial of our old life and stepping into new life in Christ.

2. A Beautiful Picture of the Triune God

Mark 1:9–11 gives us a vivid glimpse of the Trinity in perfect harmony:

  • God the Son standing in the Jordan River,

  • God the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and

  • God the Father speaking approval from heaven.

Just as all three Persons of the Godhead worked in unison during creation (Genesis 1:1–2, John 1:1–3), they unite here at the inauguration of redemption.

3. Love Before Performance

Perhaps the most incredible part of this passage is the Father’s declaration: "You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy."

Consider the timing: Jesus had not yet preached a sermon, healed the sick, performed a miracle, or gone to the cross. The Father’s love was not earned by Jesus’ achievement; it was freely declared over His identity. In the same way, God’s love for you isn't based on your performance. Before you ever do anything for Him, you are already deeply loved and valued by Him.

Questions for Reflection

  • Obedience: Have I followed Jesus in water baptism as a public step of faith and obedience?

  • Identity: Do I truly rest in the truth that God loves me, or am I constantly trying to perform to earn His approval?

  • Daily Living: How would my day change if I lived from a place of being already accepted and loved by God?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You for stepping into humanity and leaving us an example to follow.

Holy Spirit, rest upon me daily. Lead me, teach me, and direct my steps.

Heavenly Father, thank You that my worth is tied to Your love, not my performance. Help me to live today from a place of secure identity, knowing I am Your beloved child. Amen.
