COME, FOLLOW ME

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

"Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News. 'The time promised by God has come at last!' he announced. 'The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!'

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, 'Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!' And they left their nets at once and followed him. A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men."

Mark 1:14–20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Mark continues his fast-paced narrative. In just thirteen short verses, he has introduced John the Baptist, recorded Jesus’ baptism, and summarized His wilderness temptation. Now, Mark reveals the centerpiece of Jesus’ public ministry: the announcement of the Kingdom and the invitation to follow Him.

Two core elements stand out in this passage:

Key Insights

1. The Message: The Kingdom Has Arrived

Jesus declared, "The Kingdom of God is near!" Throughout the Old Testament, God promised a Savior who would break the power of sin and restore humanity. In Jesus, that promised future became a present reality.

His message required a two-fold response:

  • Repent: Turn away from self-centered living and religious self-reliance.

  • Believe: Trust fully in the Good News that Jesus is the Son of God who brings true freedom and salvation.

2. Messengers: Called from the Everyday

Jesus didn't recruit His first leaders from royal palaces or religious academies. He went to the shore of Galilee and chose four hard-working fishermen: Simon, Andrew, James, and John.

Jesus offered them a trade-off: leave behind the security of their nets for an eternal purpose—fishing for people. Their response was immediate: "They left their nets at once and followed him." Following Jesus always requires letting go of what used to define our security so we can step into what He has planned for us.

Questions for Reflection

  • Surrender: Have I genuinely repented of my sins and submitted to Jesus as both my Savior and the King of my life?

  • Calling: Am I willing to lay down my own "nets"—my comfort, pride, or worldly ambitions—to follow where Jesus leads?

  • Purpose: Jesus said, "Follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people." Am I actively looking for opportunities to share the Good News with those around me?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Messiah who brought God's Kingdom to earth. I turn away from my sin and put my trust in You as my Savior and Lord.

Holy Spirit, give me the courage to leave behind anything that holds me back from following Christ fully. Teach me how to 'fish for people' with wisdom, love, and grace.

Open my eyes to see the people in my daily life who need Your hope, and use me as an instrument of Your Good News. Amen.
