WHAT WE BELIEVE VS HOW WE BEHAVE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Romans 12:1–2 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul makes a decisive transition from doctrine to duty in Romans 12—from what we believe to how we behave.
Throughout the New Testament, sound doctrine always lays the foundation for daily living. In chapters 12 and 13, Paul zeroes in on practical relationships. And he starts at the absolute foundation: our relationship with God.
Paul answers the most frequent question asked by believers: "How can I know God's will for my life?"
The Four "Therefores" of Romans
In Romans 12:1, Paul uses the phrase translated "And so" (or "I plead with you therefore"). This marks the fourth major structural anchor in the letter:
The "Therefore" of Condemnation (Romans 3:20): Declaring that the whole world stands guilty before God.
The "Therefore" of Justification (Romans 5:1): Declaring that we have peace with God through faith in Jesus.
The "Therefore" of Assurance (Romans 8:1): Declaring that there is now no condemnation for those in Christ.
The "Therefore" of Dedication (Romans 12:1): Calling us to respond to God's immense mercy by surrendering our entire lives to Him.
Because of all God has done for us (chapters 1–11), dedication is our natural response. Paul outlines three practical steps to discern and walk in God's perfect will:
1. Give Your Body to God: A Living Sacrifice
Paul draws on Old Testament imagery. Under the Old Covenant, an animal was slain and placed on the altar to be consumed by fire.
Under the New Covenant, we present our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice:
Living: Unlike ancient sacrifices, we remain alive. The challenge with a "living" sacrifice is that it can tend to crawl off the altar when things get difficult! We must daily choose to place our physical lives back on the altar.
Holy & Set Apart: Just as marriage vows set a husband and wife apart exclusively for each other, presenting our bodies to God means surrendering all competing options. We no longer ask, "What feels good to my flesh?" but "What honors my Lord?"
2. Give Your Mind to God: The Metamorphoo Shift
Paul commands us: "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you by changing the way you think."
The Greek word for "transformed" is metamorphoo, from which we get our word metamorphosis. In grade school, many of us watched a caterpillar enter a quiet cocoon and emerge as a stunning butterfly.
Human effort tries to conform us from the outside in, but the Holy Spirit transforms us from the inside out. Just as the caterpillar hides away for transformation to occur, we must hide away in God's Word. Daily reading, meditation, and scripture memory rewire our thinking, shifting our minds from world-conformers to world-transformers.
3. Give Your Will to God: From "To-Do" Lists to Kingdom Prayer
Our minds direct our bodies, but our will controls our minds. Human willpower alone inevitably fails, but yielding our will to God unlocks Spirit-empowered direction.
Surrendering our will happens primarily in prayer—moving from self-centered requests to Jesus' model: "Not my will, but Yours be done."
A Pastoral Turning Point:
Many years ago, the Holy Spirit challenged me to stop using prayer as a time to hand God my personal "To-Do" list. Instead, I began focusing on worshiping Him and asking for His Kingdom and will to be established in my life, family, and community.
That single adjustment transformed my prayer life. My desires naturally aligned with His heart, and I began experiencing incredible "God-moments" where I simply flowed into His will rather than striving to figure out my next step.
Reflection & Application
Are you crawling off the altar? Is there an area of your physical life, habits, or desires that you need to place back on the altar as a living sacrifice today?
Is your mind experiencing metamorphosis? Are you allowing the world's culture to press you into its mold, or are you letting God's Word renew your mind daily?
What does your prayer life look like? Are you handing God a list of demands, or are you quietly yielding your will to His perfect plan?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, in response to all You have done for me, I offer my body to You today as a living and holy sacrifice. I choose to set myself apart for Your purposes.
Be my Teacher and Guide as I open the Scriptures. Transform my mind and renew my thought patterns so that I think Your thoughts and see life through Your eyes.
I yield my will, my emotions, and my personal plans to Your Lordship. Not my will, but Yours be done in my life, my family, and my community today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
