ARE WE OPEN TO TRUTH
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
Romans 1:19-20 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are always those individuals who claim to be agnostic or atheist because they say they can’t see God. The problem is not an ability to see God but a mental decision to ignore God.
No one can see truth unless they are open to truth. If you chose to ignore the truth around you, then you will not see that truth.
I know of people who are so convinced of their intelligence they have developed a narrative that they think is truth. For these people anything that pokes a hole in their narrative is dismissed and ignored. They have convinced themselves their narrative is truth. This can happen about relationships, finances, physical health, and God.
Some people have convinced themselves the problems they have with relationships is always the other person’s fault. Others convince themselves their lack of proper eating, exercise, and sleep has nothing to do with their bad health. Others convince themselves they just can’t get a break to be financially secure—they totally ignore their unwillingness to work hard, show up on time, and not spend more than they make.
Some people will choose to declare they don’t believe in God because they can’t see Him; or, others will say “how can there be a loving Father God when there is so much evil in the world.” Since their minds can’t understand everything about a “higher power” then there must not be a “higher power.” But do we want a God we can fully figure out?
Paul tells us that God has revealed Himself to us through His creation. When we study science, we realize the incredible complexity of our world. The tilt of the earth is just right to sustain life. The amazing variety in species shows that God is very creative. The volcano, tidal wave, and hurricane reveal to us the power of God.
When I begin to study creation, I am amazed at the details God put into the design of our world. Years ago, I learned that if there is a design there must be a designer. Anything left to itself deteriorates into chaos—it never improves itself into order.
If I don’t work in my yard to pull out the weeds, water the grass, and put out fertilizer, my yard will look horrible in short order. When I see a good-looking yard, I know someone is spending time making it look that good.
While the earth is not perfect—mostly because of sinful humanity that is working overtime to destroy each other and our planet—the incredible balance in the design of our world lets me know there had to be a designer. The creator, God.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Heavenly Father I open my mind to You. I believe You are the Creator of the universe. I want You to design my life. I yield to Your control.
