DOING EVEN MORE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 4:1-2 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

As Paul moves into this new section, he begins with commendation. He recognizes that the Thessalonians are already walking the right path, but he challenges them not to settle.

Here are three things we can learn about living a life that pleases God:

1. Growth is a Journey, not a Destination

Paul says, “You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more.” This tells us that obedience is progressive. We are constantly being refined and molded into the image of Christ. We won't reach perfection on this side of eternity, but we should always be in a state of spiritual "forward motion." The goal isn't just to be "good enough," but to grow "even more" in our likeness to Jesus.

2. Love is Motivation, Not Wage

The Thessalonians weren't trying to live correctly so that God would love them; they lived correctly because they already knew they were loved. It’s like my marriage—I don't do things for Cindy so that she will start loving me. I feel her love, and that love motivates me to honor her with my choices. When we serve God out of a position of security, obedience becomes a joy rather than a chore.

3. The Word is the Ultimate Authority

Paul reminds them that his teaching was based on "the authority of the Lord Jesus." As we grow, we shouldn't just look to human traditions or a list of "do’s and don’ts" made by man. We look to the Word of God. While God uses anointed men and women to speak into our lives, their message must always align with the ultimate authority: the love and truth of Jesus Christ.

Today’s Reflection

  • Next Step: What is one specific area of your life where God is calling you to a new level of obedience or growth?

  • "Why": Check your heart today. Are you trying to "earn" God’s approval, or are you resting in the fact that He already calls you His beloved child?

  • Source: Are you positioned to regularly hear God’s Word through trusted, anointed voices who keep you grounded in the truth?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, show me the steps I need to take to progress in my journey of faith today. Help me to daily recognize and receive Your love so that it becomes the fuel for my obedience. Bring people into my life who can help me hear and understand Your Word more clearly. Amen.
