WHEN WE ARE GENEROUS, EVERYONE WINS

ree

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”

Proverbs 11:25 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The Bible has a lot to say about giving—it’s one of the most frequently discussed topics in all of Scripture.

There are two main reasons why God emphasizes generosity so often.

First, when we are generous, we reflect the very nature of God. Our God is a generous God. He loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die for our sins. Every day, He continues to give—grace, mercy, forgiveness, and blessings we don’t deserve.

Second, generosity helps us overcome the spirit of greed and selfishness that comes from our sinful nature. From the moment we’re born, selfishness comes naturally. One of the first words a child learns is “mine.” That’s human nature—but God calls us to rise above it.

Part of the struggle many people have is because of a “zero sum” philosophy. This is the idea that for me to win someone has to lose. This works well in golf and football. But in the game of life, we don’t have to beat others and make them lose so we can win.

For instance, if I use my time, talent, and treasure to improve my lawn and home I raise the value of my home. I don’t decrease the value of my neighbor’s home—in fact I increase the value of the whole neighborhood.

If I use my talent to mentor young men, I grow as a better person. I also grow those young men and help them be more productive in life. Everybody wins.

When we choose to give of our time, talent, and treasure, we’re not just blessing others—we’re breaking the hold of greed and selfishness over our lives. Generosity is an act of spiritual freedom. It opens our hearts, aligns us with God’s character, and releases His joy within us. It also improves the lives of others. Everybody wins when we choose to be generous.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, show me opportunities to be generous with my time, talent, and treasure. Let my life reflect the generous heart of my Father. Amen.
