TRUE FRIENDSHIP SHARPENS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Proverbs 27:17 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Bible reminds us that we were not created to go through life alone. We need each other—because two are always better than one. True friendship is about helping one another grow, even when it’s uncomfortable.
1. Sharpening Creates Sparks
When iron strikes iron, sparks fly. Sharpening always involves friction. In the same way, real growth in our relationships often comes through tough conversations.
We can keep things smooth by avoiding hard questions, but that only leads to shallow relationships. Love sometimes looks like speaking the truth in kindness, asking the hard questions, and refusing to ignore what needs to be addressed.
2. Sharpening Requires Intentionality
A knife can’t be sharpened just by rubbing it against anything—it requires the right tool, used with care.
In life, this means we must choose wisely who we allow to speak into our lives. Not everyone has the right motives. We need friends who love us enough to challenge us and help remove the “dull edges” that keep us from being our best.
3. Without Friction, the Knife Stays Dull
Left alone, a blade grows dull. In the same way, we become spiritually dull when we live only for ourselves. None of us can see our own blind spots, which is why we need people who love us enough to correct, encourage, and guide us.
This goes both ways: we must be open to the tough questions, but we must also love others enough to ask the hard questions when they need it. True friendship sharpens both ways.
Reflection Questions:
• Who has permission to ask you tough questions?
• Who are you helping to grow by asking the hard but loving questions?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me to welcome the tough questions that lead to growth. Make me the kind of friend who loves deeply enough to speak the truth in love. Use my relationships to sharpen me and use me to sharpen others.
