THE CHARACTER OF OUR KING

ree

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation. All of your works will thank you, Lord, and your faithful followers will praise you. They will speak of the glory of your kingdom; they will give examples of your power. They will tell about your mighty deeds and about the majesty and glory of your reign. For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. The Lord always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does. The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads.”

Psalm 145:8–14 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

At the time this psalm was written, the world outside Israel defined greatness through domination. The most powerful kings conquered lands, silenced their opponents, glorified their own names, and accumulated vast wealth.

Totally different from today, right? Wrong!

Human selfishness hasn’t changed. But God’s kingdom stands in sharp contrast to the kingdoms of this world. Psalm 145 invites us to reflect on the character of our King—one who reigns with mercy, compassion, and faithfulness.

1. He Is Merciful and Compassionate

David declares, “The Lord is good to everyone.” God doesn’t play favorites or reserve His goodness for a select few. His compassion extends to all His creation.

Have you paused today to thank God for His mercy and compassion?

You and I are alive because of His mercy. We are sinners who deserve judgment, yet God has shown compassion and given us life. Every breath we take is evidence of His mercy.

2. He Always Keeps His Promises

Our God is a promise-keeper. That’s why it’s vital to know what He has promised. As we study His Word, we discover His character and learn to trust His faithfulness.

When we know His promises, we can stand on them with confidence:

“My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” — Philippians 1:6

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

He never fails to do what He says He will do.

3. He Helps the Fallen

The enemy loves to whisper lies—that when we fail, God is angry and ready to discard us.

I used to picture God as a harsh judge in the sky, waiting for me to mess up so He could punish me. But that’s not who He is.

God doesn’t delight in our stumbles; He delights in helping us back up. Like a loving parent cheering for a child learning to walk, our Heavenly Father celebrates our progress and lifts us when we fall. He heals, restores, and sets us back on the right path.

Today’s Reflection

Take a few moments to praise God for who He is:

• Merciful and compassionate

• Faithful and true to His promises

• Gentle and gracious when we fall

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I praise You for who You are. Thank You for Your mercy and compassion. Thank You for always keeping Your promises. Thank You for lifting me when I fall and for never giving up on me. Help me to reflect Your character to others today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
