HUMILITY AND DISCERNMENT

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket. To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry.”
Proverbs 25:11–12 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Gold jewelry has a purpose—it enhances a person’s appearance. It’s valuable, beautiful, and noticeable. Solomon uses this image to show that when we listen to valid criticism or timely advice, it adds beauty and value to our lives.
In other words, a teachable heart is attractive.
When we receive correction or advice with humility, it makes our character shine like gold.
Three Observations
1. We must open our lives to others
You can’t receive advice or correction if you live in isolation. God places people in our lives to speak truth, encouragement, and even correction when needed.
If we think we know it all, we’ll shut the door to growth. I’ve known people who refused to let anyone challenge them—they surrounded themselves with “yes” people. That’s a poor way to live and a sure way to stop growing.
True wisdom requires connection and openness.
2. We must walk in humility
Pride says, “I don’t need anyone’s advice.”
Humility says, “I still have room to grow.”
Pride blinds us to our flaws, but humility helps us see clearly. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). I don’t know about you, but I desperately need God’s grace—so I must continually guard my heart against pride.
Humility is the soil where growth happens.
3. We must listen with discernment
Not all advice or criticism is good. Some comes from wrong motives, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing valuable in it. Listening allows the Holy Spirit to help us separate truth from error.
If we dismiss everything we hear, we may miss something God is trying to say to us through another person.
That’s why discernment is key—listen with the Spirit’s guidance.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, give me a teachable heart. Help me to receive advice and correction with humility and wisdom. Teach me to discern what is true and let go of what or not. Shape me daily into the image of Christ. Amen.
